Risk Assessments And The Right Level Of Staff Training

Health And Safety training for all ...

No matter how small your franchise business, everyone who works for you needs to know how to work safely and without any risks to their health ...

All franchise businesses need some degree of risk assessment and staff training!

As a business owner, this means you must provide clear instructions and information, and adequate training, for your employees.

"It does not mean that you have to go overboard though!"

You know what your business is about, and simple risk assessments will highlight any priority areas where training should be considered necessary.

The Health and Safety Executive expect business owners to take "a proportionate approach to training"; for example, a low-risk business would not need lengthy technical training. Providing simple information or instructions is likely to be sufficient.

One way of achieving this is by providing consistent and timely information through online training. Available 24/7 on PCs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones, courseware can be distributed in a format which is easy to understand and access, even to remote workers.

Keeping electronic training records will help you to confirm training has happened and identify when refresher training might be needed.

By offering this really efficient way of providing induction and refresher training to staff, contractors and self-employed people working for you, you can ensure they have the right level of information on:

  • Hazards and risks they may face, if any

  • Measures in place to deal with those hazards and risks, if necessary

  • How to follow any emergency procedures

Some of your staff may have particular training needs, for example:

  • New recruits

  • People changing jobs or taking on extra responsibilities

  • Young employees, who are particularly vulnerable to accidents

  • Health and safety representatives

The AFA provides a suite of online health and safety courses that include:

  • Health and safety induction

  • Manual handling

  • Hazardous substances

  • Risk assessment

These can be used to help you learn how to produce a risk assessment, provide a general induction to staff and provide information into the common risks associated with manual handling and hazardous substances and training on how to minimise these risks.
